Imhoff Museum

Imhoff Museum is a Municipal Heritage Property, as well as designated in 2005 a Provincial Heritage Property, located eight kilometers south of St. Walburg in the Rural Municipality of Frenchman Butte. The property consists of a 3.2 hectare parcel of land that features an artist’s studio, farm house, barn, and other ancillary buildings.
Imhoff Museum is open daily June 1 to September long weekend, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and by appointment outside opening hours. The Museum is located 8 kms south and 2 kms west of St. Walburg. Contact Bert Imhoff 306-248-7072 for more information.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of Imhoff Museum resides in its association with the life and work of Berthold Imhoff, an internationally renowned artist who settled in Saskatchewan in 1914. Born in Germany where he studied painting at various academies, Imhoff immigrated to Reading, Pennsylvania in 1892 where he set up an art studio. Specializing in frescoes, murals, and biblical scenes, Imhoff established himself as a decorator of churches, opera houses, theatres, banks, movie houses, and large residences. In 1914, he relocated to northwestern Saskatchewan, where he lived and painted until his death in 1939. It was at this studio that Imhoff produced much of his artwork, including still lifes, portraits of early First Nations chiefs, European leaders and royalty, and American presidents.

Well-known for his religious artwork, which he painted for little or no pay, Imhoff’s work appears in over 90 churches and cathedrals throughout Canada and the United States. His dedication to the church was recognized by Pope Pius XI, who honoured Imhoff with the Knighthood of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1937. Upon his death in 1939, Berthold Imhoff left over 250 paintings in his studio, some of which remain there today, while others are on display in a gallery in nearby Lloydminster.

The St. Walburg & District Historical Museum is housed in the original Catholic Church in St. Walburg. The building was built in: and in 1984 was opened as a museum in 1984.
The volunteers at the Museum have worked hard to maintain the building both inside and out; the siding and roof being redone in 2010-2011 and the windows being redone in 2012-2013. The most recent project the museum volunteers have undergone is the restoration of the Imhoff paintings around the altar area.
As of right now that project is put on hold due to the substantial costs.

St. Walburg Chuckwagon Interpretive Centre

Description of Historic Place

The C.N. Station at Railway Avenue is a Municipal Heritage Property comprising a single lot on Railway Avenue in the Town of St. Walburg. The property features a single storey, wood-frame train station constructed in 1922. Open by appointment and during the St. Walburg Wild Blueberry Festival. For more information contact the Town of St. Walburg Office at 306-248-3232.

Heritage Value

The C.N. Station at Railway Avenue is valued for its role in the development of the community. The announcement that a branch line would be built through the area caused a village to form around this site in 1919. The railroad linked the community to a trans-national transportation network that made St. Walburg a regional hub. This station was completed 1921 and quickly came to symbolize the railway’s importance to the community. Although the station was closed in 1982, it served the area as a community centre and art gallery and is presently being converted into a chuckwagon interpretive centre. It stands as a landmark in St. Walburg.

The C.N. Station at Railway Avenue is also valued for its architecture, which reflects standard railway station design. Canadian National Railways, like most railway companies, employed a series of standardized plans to reduce startup costs. This standard fourth-class Canadian National Railway station was designed to handle both people and freight in small communities.
